HARRISBURG, Pa.—August 9, 2017—Businesses and business owners have a new option when looking for legal counsel in Central Pa. Penwell Bowman + Curran LLC, a law firm that seeks to combine 21st century legal expertise with decades of legal and business experience, announced its opening today at 215 Pine Street in downtown Harrisburg. In an effort to break free from the traditional law firm model, the firm was built on a fresh, client-centered and technology-driven approach to redefine legal counsel for every phase of the business life cycle.
“I’ve practiced corporate and securities law for 35 years at highly ranked and prestigious law firms – predominantly in the Mid-Atlantic region – and been involved as an entrepreneur in founding numerous companies, growing them and selling them. It was time to marry my experience as a lawyer and entrepreneur to deliver a better product to clients in a more personal, economic and transparent way and to add a young and fresh perspective to the practice of law,” said Scott Penwell, one of the founders of Penwell Bowman + Curran LLC.
Penwell met the firm’s other founding partners, Brandt Bowman and Matthew Curran, while practicing at a major regional law firm. It was evident that the young, entrepreneurial, and accomplished pair of lawyers shared his same vision for creating better legal solutions crafted for clients’ needs while bringing a new view to the practice of law.
“Scott’s experience not only as a lawyer, but also as an entrepreneur, attracted Matt and me to start this firm with him. Our goal is to provide legal services to clients in a way that we would want to purchase them as entrepreneurs and business owners,” Bowman said.
One of the firm’s goals is to couple the flexibility and accessibility of a small firm with the experience and sophistication found in larger law firms.
“While most law firms use the billable hour, it often drives a wedge between clients and their attorney. For that reason, we will emphasize alternative fee arrangements including fixed-fees and not-to-exceed quotes that are designed to provide predictability to clients,” Curran said.
The firm will focus on capital raising for companies in a broad range of industries, ongoing business and contractual services, securities compliance, employment services, and mergers and acquisitions. They will also focus on providing legal services to certain industry segments such as financial institutions, which includes banks, insurance companies, insurance agents, and investment funds, as well as franchisors, investors and professionals of all types.
Penwell has been an investor in numerous start-up ventures and has started, grown and sold two insurance companies: Eastern Alliance Insurance Company, a national writer of workers compensation insurance, and Great Falls Insurance Company, a carrier licensed to write insurance in Maine and New Hampshire. Bowman practiced for five years at a major regional law firm and graduated summa cum laude from both Susquehanna University and the Dickinson School of Law of the Pennsylvania State University, in addition to being recognized by Philadelphia Magazine as Rising Star for Business/Corporate Law. Curran practiced for four years as a business attorney at a major regional law firm and graduated summa cum laude in addition to receiving the Dean’s Award from Widener Commonwealth Law School.
